Balahé
gave birth to her first foal and I couldn't be any happier!
Hans Karsten is keeping up the damline of my t.b. mare Ionia with any foal he
breeds out of her daughter Balahé and idealistiscally, I consider them all
"mine"!
So when Belle K was born, of course I was overly excited and couldn't wait to
get to see her!
When Hans took over Balahé age three it was the perfect arrangement for all of
us:
I can't keep all my horses, however, I wouldn't want to give up on a filly out
of my thoroughbred mare Ionia xx, either. Employing a t.b. mare in warmblood
breeding to me is the greatest challenge of all. Failure or success will only be
visible in further generations. In order to learn, I want to be able to follow
the development of further progeny out of "my" t.b. damline, the descend out of
Ionia, that is.
Hans Karsten is a good friend of mine and the former owner of Beltain (sire of
Belissimo). Hans has always been a true fan of the hannoverian damline of Dr.
Max Schulz, who bred Beltain, Brentano I & II; Wolkenstein I, II & III,
Garibaldi I & II and many more. Hans bought Beltain as a young horse from Max
Schulz and has bred many foals by him, too. Hans also shares my affinity for
t.b. blood in warmblood breeding and when he was looking for a future broodmare,
Balahé simply blended in perfectly as she combines both:
highest thoroughbred influence via her mother (t.b. mare Ionia) and as a
daughter of Brentano II, she also embodies the very damline of Dr. Max Schulz
and those precious genetics Hans used to favour all those years:
Bolero, Grande, Ferdinand, Wendekreis, Marcio xx and many more.
When Hans was looking for a stallion to breed Balahé to, he was looking for a
son of Belissimo. That way he would keep up with the heritage of his own former
stallion Beltain (sire of Belissimo) and at the same time he would inbreed to
the line of Dr. Max Schulz and double up on the B-Line, a breeding principle, he
had practized all those years before, too. No surprise Belle K embodies a lot of
the classic features of the B-Line, and she obviously does so in a very refined
manner.
Barclay - Belissimo - Beltain - Bolero (Beltain descending from the damline of
Dr. Max Schulz) and Brentano - Bolero, also descending form that very damline.
Belle K, five days old
Belle K is Hans' only foal this year and he didn't want her to grow up all by
herself. I immediately agreed to take Ionia and her son
Legolas over to Hans' barn, so Legolas and Belle K
could grow up together. To me, this is the greatest pleasure of all, since it
offers me the rare opportunity to see two closely related foals descending from
my own t.b. damline grow up together.
No better way to compare various get out of the same damline and recognize
similarities and differences at the same time!
This was supposed to become the summer of "learning about t.b. influence in
warmblood breeding" and it would be all about my very own t.b.damline - what a
treat!
So here they are, thoroughbred mare Ionia, mother of Balahé and Legolas, and
Belle K, daughter of Balahé. And while Ionia (bay) and Balahé (chestnut) are
easy to recognize, Legolas and Belle K sometimes look like clons. You can tell
them from each other by Belle K's white sock at her left hindleg.
Belle K and Legolas playing
Milkraider!
Even though Ionia never had
problems with her milk and always feeds her foals sufficiently, Legolas found
out that one udder simply isn't good enough...
When Balahé, his elder
sister, stands next to her mother Ionia in the sun, kind of sleeping (obviously
DEEP asleep and dreaming...) Legolas would drink from his mum's udder first,
still licking his lips from the milk, only to creeping over to his big sister
Balahé and docking on at her udder as well - testing out if there might be a
different taste available within the familie's milkbar... hilarious!
A real family affair, after all, and probably the most precious thing a breeder
will ever get to see - these are two healthy foals with two healthy mum's of
their own. Yet, Legolas finds ways to make life even a little more exciting and
worthwhile - milkraider, he is!
watch closely: in front Belle K is
drinking from her mum's udder (Balahé), on the other side Legolas, the
"Milkraider" has docked on - you can see his head underneath the udder :-)
