This morning Fannie Mae gave birth to her first foal,  a beautiful black colt by Sir Donnerhall  and she did it all by herself!
I am very proud of my Fannie and more than delighted to see Sansibar jump around sound and happy!

those legs are far too long and specially the fetlocks cause a lot of trouble for him when having to move - i have never had a foal with such long fetlocks - will they ever unfold???

two days later and the world already looks completely different:
did i still have to guide and hold him up out of his stall yesterday, today he already jumps ahead and follows his mum as if he had never done anything else... those far too long legs and fetlocks have amazingly streched, mother nature did a great job! and when Fannie Mae decides to go for a speedy canter Sansibar follows - and how he does! Canter is his favourite move at this point in time, trott still involves a lot of effort to sort out those legs...
THIS is the canter i have been hoping for when choosing Sir Donnerhall and his holsteiner damline origin:
well jumped through and greatly uphill with wonderful front leg mechanics - Sansibar - you are wonderful!

at the age of three weeks (when these pictures were taken) Sansibar has already been sold. I am amazed how fast it went and still can't believe it myself... he will be joining Paul Schockemöhle's colt's herd at Lewitz Stud later this summer and will be raised as a stallion prospect.
When i showed him trotting next to Fannie I realized how greatly he has developed during those three weeks - whenever he comes back from canter he immediately carries the following trott well through and continues to step on and swing employing the most rhythmical move and with greatest knee action - and i keep asking myself again and again:

shouldn't I breed Fannie to Sir Donnerhall a second time?
as i had initially planned to only breed her once and than turn her into a sport horse for myself...
but right now. temptation is hard to resist...

the blue halter by the way is a birthday present from his "godmother" Melanie and of course we needed to take a picture for her! And i simply can't get enought of his precious look in this picture - the most charming little colt...

on April 24. Sansibar is being shown at the Vechta foal inspection to become registered and branded Oldenburg.
of course my friend Melanie would come with us and provide for physical and mental support at the same time!
I was amazed at the reponses we got from people around asking if I would want to sell Sansibar - he obviously left best impressions!
but the greatest of all honours was the announcment "No.68 recieves the title Premium Foal and will be accepted to the auction!"
I have always dreamed of breeding a foal that would show up at an auction - who wouldn't dream of such thing?
Now here he was- already sold...
some bitter-sweet honour but most of all: the greatest pride...

... two years later:

7. November 2009:
Sansibar is licensed!
Today Sansibar has become a licensed stallion!
I couldn't be any happier as this is the greatest success in my short history of sport horse breeding...
Not only is this the first foal I ever bred out of my mare Fannie Mae who I bought as a young filly herself - having seen herself grow and develop and putting a lot of effort in Fannie's management and breeding plans this success comes as a wonderful bonus to simply make my very personal "Fidermark story" a wonderful package of greatest gifts to me... as this is what it really is:
my "Fidermark story", that started 15 years ago when Fidermark and Michael Farwick simply changed my life with their stunning appearance and made me wish to own a horse like that, too...

Today Sansibar has set a milestone in that story for me:
It was the first time I saw him again ever since I soldhim to Paul Schockemöhle two years ago. Sansibar still is a lanky and very immature stallion with naturally given gifts and talents:

leverage and rythm. It really took my breath away when I saw him move, cadence most certainly is his fourth basic gaite... And what makes me even more happy:
He is going to stay with Schockemöhle, no intention to sell.

I guess that speaks more than anything else for Fannie's eldest son... good luck, Sansibar!

16. March 2010  Sansibar stands at stud in the Netherlands!

Today I received a phone call of a different kind:
one of these calls that start with a lot of questionmarks in your head and finally develops into one of the most exciting news story that simply makes your day!
Gertjan van Olst called to ask me about the damline of my colt Sansibar - I was all confused, wondering why someone from the Netherlands would be interested to learn about Sansibar's damline... Gertjan introduced himself as a stallion owner and explained to me that he had been looking for a promising breeding stallion as a coplementary addition of well bespoken bloodlines to stand at stud at his own barn in the Netherlands - I was all excited!
And I was even more thrilled when I learned that at the van Olst stables the lady in charge of the dressage training was Anne van Olst, four times Olympic team rider of the danish dressage equipe!
Could it have become any better?
Sansibar is already offered for breeding at the van Olst Stables and supposed to pass his Stallion Perfomance Test later this year in the Netherlands.
And Gertjan choose exactly those words on his dutch webside that he choose to describe to me what he sees in Sansibar:
Salcido, de zwarte “Sir Donnerhall” zoon, is in alles een top atleet met 3 super basisgangen en topinstelling en geniaal gefokt”.
" ... a top athlete with three super gaites and a top attitude of genious breeding..."
Can you tell I was thrilled?
I am greatful to know Sanibar at the van Olst barn and overly happy to see him as an active breeding stallion within reach and can't wait to see his first crop on the ground next year. As I couldn't think of any better prove than this to learn even more about the genetic quality of my very own damline by Fidermark in the future - so excited!
